Addicted…to Excuses

Daily Meditation #91–5/24/2022

“Man, it really sucks my genetics predispose me to alcoholism! Nothing I can do — hair of the dog, bro!”

There was an alcoholic father of two sons.
Every night, he’d come home drunk, then beat and molest his sons, some nights even abusing their mother right before their eyes.

Eventually, the sons grew into men and escaped…

One son grew up to be a wicked alcoholic and abusive man.

One son grew up to become a successful businessman who gave back to his community.

When asked “How did you become who you are?” both sons answer “Because my father was an alcoholic.”

Don’t let excuses, your situations, or your past define you.
Stop making excuses that give you permission to continue existing identifying as anything less than who you should be.

Follow for daily philosophical meditations.

These are distillations from my coming book “YouDaimonia: the Ancient Philosophy of Human Flourishing.”
