You Are a Miserable Person

Daily Meditation 811–5/19/2024

Have you ever met a truly miserable human being? Or, perhaps more likely, someone going through a truly miserable part of their life?

Sometimes you can sort of tell, can’t you? There’s just something “greasy” about the very aura that floats about them — you can’t quite put a finger on it. They don’t look into your eyes. Maybe they never smile back. You can tell they do a bare minimum for self-care such as bathing or proper eating. And when they speak? It’s only to complain, be victim, or to cause ruination of others.

Firstly, we must love these people, no matter what. All people must be loved by us. However, loving people doesn’t mean we blindly trust them. It doesn’t mean we endorse or affirm their decisions or lifestyles, per se. This loving of everyone doesn’t really mean we can’t sometimes keep those who are troubled at arms length for our own safety or family’s wellbeing.

But today’s meditation isn’t one talking about those wretched few who themselves are utterly miserable, scraping by in life and enjoying when others fail or, themselves, feel misery.

No, today is for us — everyone else — who also go through our own seasons. And sometimes, we may have a “Misery Season” (there’s a melodic black metal band name, if you’ve been searching for one).
