Work and Family — (Ir)replaceable
Daily Meditation 1,020–12/20/2024
Very recently, I saw someone iterate a point I’ve written about in these DMs a few times:
“If you died today
Your boss would replace you in less than a week
Your family would miss you forever…
Prioritize accordingly.”
And just as in the other Meditations, I’ll make a similar point to this quote — you are replaceable…
To everyone except those who love you most.
And yet…
It is those we love most that we take most for granted!
We very often prioritize the immediate at the expense of the future or far future.
Look at our careers. How often do many of us end up staying a bit late for the overtime — we miss recitals, soccer games, youth group programs…All for some (criminally high taxed) extra overtime buckage.
Or, we stay on our games for hours every evening, missing the rich opportunity of simply being together with our spouse and children.
Look — you don’t need to spend every single waking minute with those you love. But, you know that when you’re on your death bed, hopefully at 90+, you won’t be thinking of all the “good work” you did.
You’ll be looking back wishing for all the missing nights of Uno or Monopoly you could’ve had.
So go!
You are irreplaceable!
