“WHEW”

Daily Meditation 935–9/22/2024

Ever walk down the street or in a store or at a park and see an ex of yours, then think “Whew! Man did I not miss out there!”

And you consider this as she’s now put on 100+ pounds.
He’s now wearing a MAGA hat.
She’s now religious, in church all the time.
He’s stopped going to the gym and went bald.

Here’s the rub: we alway (mis)percieve ourselves relative to exes. It is very seldom that we look at an ex and think “Aw man, they’re way better off than when we split.” Instead, we will unconsciously find some minutia with which to judge ourselves better off.

We’re almost usually better off in some ways, but so are they. You split for some reason — valid or not — and moved apart.

Even if you lost 100 pounds, are ripped now, got a new job making 100k more than when you dated, and are donating 20+ hours a month to volunteering, there will inevitably be some way which they are still “dodging the bullet” with you compared to you with them.

When you see the ex out and about with their MAGA hat or their gained weight, instead of thinking “Damn, I am glad that didn’t work out. I dodged a bullet,” consider “Huh — I wonder what happened in their life which changed them so much.”
