The Unseen Servants, the Stewards
Daily Meditation 1,105–3/16/2025
As a disclaimer — the Daily Meditations are very seldom explicitly political…or religious. Though I am a devout Lutheran and have been for 37 years, I try to write these from a general, accessible tone, but sometimes there are lessons from the Bible or church which I cannot resist sharing.
I went to a small church growing up — Zion Lutheran. My great great grandfather, Johan Johansson helped build it in the 1890s. (Humorously, Johan kept getting the various Johnson families’ mail — he got tired of hopping on his horse every day to bring it to them. So, to further assimilate into America, he adopted his father’s surname and the American version of his own name. He became John Davidson. And that’s how our family became Davidsons, instead of staying Johansson)
It amazed me seeing the handcarved pews and ornate, delicate stained glass windows — all nearly 100 years old when I was born!
All the candles on the altar and in the always gleaming brass stands seemed to never run too low. The organ was always in tune. The pews were always polished and clean — old bulletins never were forgotten (I tested this). The readings on the pulpits were always cleaned up, the Bible always also open to the proper verses. The choir had their books prepared.
