That’s not fair

“That’s not fair!” said the mouse to the giraffe as the tall boy ate leaves. “Well, you can eat the delicious seeds upon the ground which I cannot reach,” came the reply.

We’re quite prone to the quasi-childish insistence on fairness.

Now — that’s not to say that fairness isn’t a good thing. It absolutely is. If you and your brother go halvsies on a Snickers, it’s only fair for mom to do her best to cut it exactly in half. Fairness is a good thing.

However, no matter how fair a playing field may be, we will always have some disadvantages.

And the positive reframe to that negative mindset is:

We, too, will have many ADVANTAGES!

When we’re applying for jobs, sure, there may be 9 other applicants with more raw-number-years experience. But, you may have years of experience in a wildly different environment which provides you a fresh perspective — which employers may actually appreciate more.

When dating, sure, there are 9 other potential mates you’re competing with — taller, skinnier, handsomer, more beautiful, “hotter,” or smarter. But, you might be better at conversation, or you’re quick witted, or are even more well read — any given individual date may find exactly what they’re looking for in you.

Long and short — life isn’t fair. Tough tootsies. That’s how the cookie crumbles.
