It can be quite easy to be afraid to do things. Sometimes the fear is quite obvious and powerful — having made a major blunder and knowing you must go admit it to your boss, for example. But many times, fear is a bit more like “fear,” where it’s a slight simmer under the surface, gnawing at us. These are the fears we mustn’t, well, fear!

You’re a writer with a completed fantasy novel, but have put off approaching an agent or publisher for years. “I don’t know where to start,” and “I don’t think it’s good enough,” and “I should re-re-re-re-edit it…”

You’re a bodybuilder who’s considered competing for years, now, but have lolligagged, giving things only 90% when you know you might win.

You’re 31 years old and have not begun saving for retirement. Your work offers a great plan and even chips into your contributions but…there’s so many little factors!

The best thing to do with the “little fears” like these is to simply start something. The 3 Ss.

Find an agent — any agent — and reach out. Be genuine, “I’m a bit nervous. I’ve obviously never published and am simply looking for a bit of guidance.” Find another lifter who you know competes, ask them to get a cup of coffee and see how to get your foot in the door. Open an account in the…
