Self-Care

Self-care isn’t necessarily about spoiling oneself for the now.

Be careful to not allow laziness, overeating, overdrinking of alcohol, overconsumption of drugs, or slovenliness to fall into the camp of “self-care.”

Is “self-care” laying on the couch all day watching reruns of “The Office?”
Is “self-care” smoking dozens of bowls of pot every day to stay mellow?
Is “self-care” eating what you feel like because you’re depressed?
Is “self-care” going out partying with friends every night to fight off bad vibes?

No.

Self-care has become these things — excuses for destruction of quality of life — but it isn’t these things.

Self-care is getting up from the couch to enjoy a walk outside when you DON’T want to.

Self-care is choosing to face reality, sober, and getting done what needs to be done in life.

Self-care is occasionally enjoying treats, but mostly eating well regardless of the ups and downs, fighting off illness through the original prescription — balanced diet and movement.

Self-care is going to bed around the same time every night, nourishing the mind with important books, and ensuring the body is hydrated and rested, not abused.

Self-care is doing what is right for the self with the future in mind…not being selfish for the moment.
