Schizophrenia
Daily Meditation #211–9/21/2022
There are multiple voices inside of you. Not unlike schizophrenia, they whisper different concepts and views.
But, often we shush up the majority of them.
We lean into the voices that best align with what we want to believe.
That our political leader of choice is the best.
That we are a good person.
That our religion is correct.
That we are smart.
All of these are highly objective beliefs.
While ignoring or silencing the ones such as:
“What if ‘my side’ cheated to gain power at any cost?”
“What if something I said unintentionally hurt someone? Do I apologize?”
“That article made a valid point… am I still a good believer?”
“Someone I thought was unqualified got the job… am I actually the unqualified one?”
We need to learn to let the other voices chime in and carefully consider them.
You don’t need to disavow any opinion or belief, but letting yourself see other sides of things can help you synthesize new angles of perception.
It can help you be more empathetic to those who oppose you.
But perhaps best of all, it can waylay our naturally narcissistic tendencies and overestimations of ourselves.
We should be confident in that which we really have mastery over — which is very, very little. Perhaps 2–3 things.
We should be curious of that which we lack understanding and that which opposes our natural beliefs.
We shouldn’t necessarily listen to the whispers of doubt, but it is equally irresponsible to entirely ignore them.
What are your “Legions” whispering to you?
