Normalcy
Daily Meditation 920–9/7/2024
We all have a wicked sense of normalcy, or normalcy bias.
You flick a switch? Electricity instantly comes on.
You twist a knob? Hot, clean, instant water.
You go to Walmart? Fresh produce, fish, meat, eggs, and shelf-stable foods.
You clock into work? Paycheck appears every other Friday.
Wake up in the morning? Spouse breathing and alive beside you.
Someone breaking into your garage? You call the police and they’re there relatively quick.
We fortunately live in a safe, well-educated, clean and instant world. Hell, you can order a fully tailored suit from the other side of planet Earth and it arrives in less than a month. That’s wild to consider.
We cannot allow our normalcy bias as listed above to make us complacent or entitled.
Just as we meditate on death to better appreciate life and health, so too should we consider our “normal” as to better appreciate how damned good life in 2024 is compared to 1924 or even 1224.
There’s no guarantee that the power will always come on.
There’s no guarantee that you’ll always have insta-water (let alone hot and clean!).
There’s no guarantee that grocery…
