Master Debater
Daily Meditation 850–6/28/2024
Last night, much of the world watched a major debate.
But the real debate we should have is within the self — and I don’t necessarily mean that as response to last night. I mean in general.
Very many of us — 95%, I would argue — constitute our beliefs based on the views of others. We treat it as a bodybuilder may treat protein; we consume it and it fortifies our existing beliefs.
We actively seek our compatible voices, complimentary views while simultaneously vomiting upon ones we may not agree with.
And we usually treat it as an us vs. them.
Science versus Christianity.
Democrats versus Republicans.
Tories versus Labour.
Blacks versus whites.
Chocolate versus vanilla (kidding here, both are good).
So, while we are seeking those who only agree, we spit upon those who disagree, and with it, drive one another apart when, in fact, perhaps we can “debate” the self via open-mindedness around them
We so often feel endangered by the mere thought of exposing ourselves to other ideas. Why is that? Is it because we think if we have even a doubt in our existing beliefs that we will crumble apart? That’s no good.
