Making Hay
Daily Meditation 1,196–6/19/2025
A short DM for today.
There’s an old expression “Make hay while the sun shines.” It comes from farming, obviously, where farmers MUST capitalize on the sunny, warm months to make their living, but doubly so for sunny days during those months — so they cut and bushel the hay while sunny. Duh.
In my career (and geography), it’s also seasonal — few people enjoy moving when there’s snow up to your waist or higher. Ergo, spring, summer, autumn…I gotta make hay!
And our life is full of “making hay” type stretches. Maybe it’s a month or two, maybe it’s a decade.
Maybe you’ve got an illness such as cancer. Some days (or weeks) you feel better than others…make the most of those good ones!
Maybe you’re in university, off for the summer. Get a job (or three), learn some skills, make some money, stuff the resume!
Maybe you’re young, smart, and good looking…you won’t be forever. Knuckle down and use your noggin to smartly seek for your spouse. Not hooking up or partying “the field,” but finding the one who will support you and stick by your side.
In closing — be able to hold the idea of your life’s “moving average.” If things are bad the last year, but suddenly is going well…make hay! Get “busy” when life is going well.
