I’m Better! — Superiority Complex

So very often we view ourselves as better than someone else.
Why is that?

I’m prettier than her.
I’m a better analyst than him.
Our family is better than theirs.
I’m a better American than they are.
She’s so stupid — how did she do better than I?

Our sense of superiority really knows no bounds and can be framed in a variety of ways. Sometimes it’s direct, other times it shows up as judgment.

And, let’s be frank — really, it’s part of the human condition as a green shoot off of our jealous nature in many cases. No matter how self-aware we develop ourselves, there will always be a time we feel this way.

Here’s the rub:

You’re not better. It’s not that you’re WORSE, per se, but you’re definitely no better than others.

Let’s frame it in work:

Imagine you interview for a promotion to Lead Whatever-You-Do. You’ve been with the company the longest in-role. You’re often the go-to for management. You generally know all the info when asked.
