Daily Meditation 633–11/21/2023

Other than the word “ball,” what’s the common denominator of the above items?

Yes, we pay the players truly unbelievable amounts…
Yes, the players seem to get increasingly talented every decade…
Yes, people have fanatical love of their favorite players and teams…

There are many “common denominators” of sports, but the biggest one is the passion people have for them. According to one recent study, 1 in 4 Americans will watch over 5 hours of sports per week.

That’s an incredible amount of time in front of a TV for a single subject. And that’s to say nothing of the hours of advertising they’re subjected to (which makes me, an advertiser, shudder).

Before you readers get too pissed off at me, this isn’t a scolding of your love of Messi or F1 or the Yankees.
It’s an open question:

What would the world be like if each of us — as individuals — had this much passion in our lives for reading. For art. For music. For writing. For fitness or carpentry or foreign language.
For betterment of the self.

There’s ample articles abounding the web tut-tutting people’s time wasting and imploring individuals to indulge in…
