Eurovision & Perception

Daily Meditation 801–5/9/2024

You don’t always get what you want…

And Eurovision is a great example of this. For the uninitiated, Eurovision is the World Cup of music each year. Some 30+ countries from Europe (and interestingly not from Europe?) each bring a song and artist. There are 2 big semi-finals and then an approximate 4 hour final where the remaining 20-odd performers sing.

(Total aside, it’s generally very silly — lots of crazy songs, funny songs, some great songs, and a good number of generic ones. If nothing else, it’s pure entertainment…if you can stomach how bizarre it sometimes is!)

I always enjoy the public conversation side of EV each year as it is a microcosm of our frequent Daily Meditations on perception.

We often fault other people for their opinions and taste. Or, put another way:

We fault other people for what WE perceive as BAD opinions and POOR taste.

Ever had a friend who likes a genre of music you would prefer to barf when you hear? Of course — and they probably have a similar view of your taste!

The EV Reddit and Facebook pages generally are filled with mostly tasteful and playful bashing of various artists.
