Daily Meditation #337–1/27/2023

Some days are good. Some, bad.

Some car rides are smooth, others fraught with tedium.

Some books are entertaining, some unfinishable.

Sometimes we are inspired, sometimes lethargic.

Not every moment of every day of each week of every month of our lives will be a momentous occasion. Not every day will even be good or pleasant.

Just as there is no guarantee we live today — let alone to 80 — there is no guarantee any meeting with your boss, your child’s temperament, any car ride, or any book will be good.

We should try to compartmentalize things we perceive as “good” or “bad.”

It may be beyond us at this exact moment to realize nothing is good or bad, at all, so instead it is useful to compartmentalize the good and bad, remembering our average state is neutral (if not good!).

While we may’ve had a car accident, today, how many hundreds — or thousands — of car rides have we had without accident?

Though today we had a rough meeting with our boss (or employee), how many meetings have we had that have been constructive?

Today your spouse woke up sick and you’re caring for them, but how many days have they had good health?

Again — nothing is really “good” or “bad” until we perceive them to be good or bad. But life is never consistently good or bad. Pleasure or pain. Success or failure.
We can invite more good or bad in. More pleasure or pain. More success or failure. We do this by living within systems, accordingly.

But for now, when the “good” days are coming your way?
Gratitude.

When the “bad?” Remember you will revert to the mean.

Nothing is forever.
