We know the phrase is cliched. Old. A well, well beaten dead horse.

But with a reframe and some self-awareness (with positive intent), let’s make it less so.

We want to be ourselves in a manner that will attract those who mean well for us.

We shouldn’t “be ourselves” as a Narcissist or Sociopath or Machiavellian. Really, as any of the Dark Tetrad…
We aren’t wanting to manipulate anyone into liking us under any circumstances. I am convinced this is why many relationships fail — people (over)present elements of themselves or lie to garner love or attention. Just look at social media — overpresentation of positive lights in our lives makes it look like we are rainbows, unicorns, and baby bunnies when we may be dying inside.

We aren’t really being ourselves.

But, to be our “pure” selves (perhaps lightly moderated) so that only the best people make it through our filter and into our orbit.

Certainly we can bring to the fore some characteristics of ourselves that are better suited for certain interactions — you don’t want your inner “Yes, I have a collection of 500 Furbys” to be showing during job interviews…

But, we can lightly exaggerate and enhance features for certain situations and actively work to ensure only the good is making it into our life.

Once you’ve mastered (or at least become more masterful of) the self, then you can turn this on its head:

“Are there people in my orbit or working their way into my orbit who are overpresenting themselves, Narcissistically? ‘Trying too hard?’ Who should I be more mindful of their attention?”

Life is already very difficult.

Let’s ensure we are vigilant in the management of ourselves — “be yourself!” — to attract the excellent while filtering out those who will become leeches of our joy.
